      (This name appears in the Stanwix Registers, the Rinyon, therein mentioned, being the father of

The name of Herbert appears very frequently in the Parish Church Registers of Arthuret and Kirklinton as a Story Christian name, and indeed in days anterior to the keeping of such registers. In early times, probably, Herbert, Francis, and David were names borne in honour of patron saints, in the first instance, then, of course, they became family or patronymical names.

The Storys of Arthuret and Kirklinton parishes have been very numerous in these parishes. They have resided at:- Angerton, Anguswell, Astonby, Bamfoot, Bleaberryrigg, Blackhill (Low), Braehead, Broughall alias Broghall, Burnsthill, Clift, Cockithill, Crook, Clough, Damhead, Dubworth, Dykemoor, Dykeside, Easton, Garliestown (or Garriestown), Gillbrae, Hallfoot, Harker, Heatherside, Holme, Holmefoot, Howberry, Howgills, Justice Town (now Lynehow) probably called Justice Town because the seat of a Justice of the
