BIOGRAPHICAL SECTION.
This library possesses a very full MS. index to the Journal of Thomas Story,
prepared by the well known Quaker genealogist, J. J. Green, of Tunbridge Wells. By
its aid I have looked up references to the author's family.
1. His Mother. - It is evident that Thomas Story, senior, married twice. The account in 'The Dictionary of National Biography' says so, and in the 'Journal,' p. 82, this also is implied, for on the same page Story refers to his mother and to his mother-in-law, meaning step-mother. This appears to be the only reference in the 'Journal' to the wives of Thomas. The first church inscription, which you have kindly copied for me, appears to refer to the first wife. With respect to the children of the first marriage, the eldest, George, who became Dean of Limerick, etc., is referred to in 'Journal,' pp. 535, 547, 548, 651. The next, Christopher, does not appear to have been referred to by his younger brother. Christopher, mentioned in the 'Journal,, pp. 467, 590, is described as 'kinsman,' and by Mr. Green, in his index, ' cousin.' I do not know anything about the daughter, Anne. 2. His Step-Mother. - I do not know anything about her, nor can I say whether the reference to Anna in the other inscription is to Thomas Story, senior's, second wife, in which case it is questionable whether the inscription refers to Thomas Story, father of the Journalist. 3. Thomas and Anne Story had no family. I do not know whether any of the other children of Thomas Story, senior, became ancestors to any of the name in America. Do you know the date of the decease of the elder Thomas Story ? His son says of him in 1715 'he was now aged and without sight.' You will find the article on Thomas Story in D.N.B. of interest. I will write you further within a few days respecting Christopher Story, of Righead. I am, Re CHRISTOPHER STORY.
I am sorry that I have not been able to find more particulars of the ancestry of
this Friend than are given in the brief account of his life, copy of which I send
herewith, and of which I ask your acceptance, if you do not already possess the
book. You will notice that Christopher says that his father was Thomas Story. Should I come across any further particulars I will endeavour to remember to send them to you. Thank you for copies of the inscriptions in Arthuret Church. Yours faithfully, "T. Wigham, Esq., In reply to your enquiry of the 1st inst I succeeded to this estate in Nov., 1877, on the 188
