THE STORYS OF LOCKINGTON.

"My brother-in-law, Mr. John Story, hath a considerable share [of properly presumably] in this †town, where his grandfather, William, purchased some [land] of Mr. *Molyneux, which his father, John, encreased, and added to it some which he bought of Richard Alvey of Colston and Henry his son."

The Story family of Colwick followed the Nowers family at Colwick. Robert Story, vivens 4th Henry VIII., was a man of great possessions; his daughters and heirs were married to members of the Hussy and Wood families. The arms borne by this Robert Story were three crosslets pattée upon a fesse, according to the seals belonging to Robert Story. [P. 6, Vol. III.]

A former High Sheriff of Notts., John Story of East Stoke and Kneveton, Co. Notts., was born in 1717, died in 1766. He married Ann, daughter of . . . . . . Metham. Questions as to date of marriage and parentage of wife, arms, &c., asked by G. J. Armytage, of Clifton, Brighouse. (N & Q., Vol. V., p. 308, Jan. to Jun., 1876.) [See Storers of Chiddingfold. Also N. & Q., Vol. IX., 1890. Godalming, Surrey.]

Inquiries about Admiral Story by "Cave North," in N, & Q. for Jan.-Jun., 1877, p. 449. The Admiral died about 60 or 70 years ago from date of inquiries (about 1807 or 1817.)

The following correspondence may here be added to the foregoing observations concerning the family of Story of Lockington :-

Maisonette, Sea Road, Bexhill-on-Sea.

Dear Sir, - I am exceedingly sorry that absence from home and illness have prevented my acknowledging your letter sooner. I fear I can give you very little information about the Story family. My husband, Robert Henry Story, died in 1907; he was in the Uncovenantcd I.C.S., and he became a J.P. after we settled in Stowmarket, 1898. He was born in India, where his father commanded the 9th Bengal Cavalry - the latter was born at Lockington in Leicestershire. I believe there is a Captain Story at Shotley. My husband's family are related to the Rich and Sadler families, and to the Dillons of Ditchley; also to the De la Poers, Trenchs and the Ponsonbys. It is most likely that Major Story, of 4 Raphael Road, Hove, Sussex, will be able to give you the information required. Very many thanks for sending me the Journal. I am always interested in the Story family, and wonder if I shall come across Mr. E. J. Story, of Ilford. My nephews are John and Francis Henry, both in India.

Yours very truly,         M. STORY.

Dear Sir, - Your letter of 13th inst. to hand. After reading it attentively, I find that there is but little I can give you. The family surname is "Story." The name of Mrs. Story's husband, who resided at Lockington House, Stowmarket, was Robert Henry Story, and his father's name Philip Bainbridge Story, a General retired, deceased, late of H.E.I.C. Service. Whether the family originally came from the North of England I cannot say. I think Mrs. Story is in error as regards the alliance between the Ponsonbys, Fanes, De la Poers and Beresfords ; if correct, it is a new light to me. The 14th Viscount Dillon of Ditchley, or Oxon., married my aunt, his brother Constantine married another aunt, and my uncle Thomas Henry Story, deceased, married a sister of the 14th Viscount Dillon, Helen, deceased. As regards Mr. Arthur E. Browne Story, it is the first I have heard of him; never heard the

† Kneveton. * Probably Molyneux branch of TevershalI.
