STORYS OF THE UNITED STATES.

The first named Storey County has Virginia for its capital; the second Storey County has for its capital Nevada.

Miss Harriet Talbot, of 35, Academy Place, Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A., having written to the compiler of this work regarding certain members of a branch of the Story family residing in Northumberland, was asked, in reply to her inquiry, if she knew anything relating to the origins of the two U.S.A. Counties, viz., Storey County, Nevada, and Story County, Iowa? On the 3rd July, 1910, Miss Talbot sent the particulars she had received from Mr. John Bowie of Virginia City, Nevada, and from Mr. C. M. Soper, Clerk of the District Court, Story County, Iowa.

"Storey County, Nevada, was named after an old Indian fighter, Captain Storey, who was killed in the Indian war here in the early days. He lived five days after being shot. An old timer living here knew the Captain well, saw him shot, and was the first to render him aid after he was shot. The Captain was born in Texas, and had a brother who lived here for a short time. Captain Storey is buried in the local cemetery here. A life-sized oil-painting of Edwin Faris Storey hangs over the entrance of the District Court, Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada." (John Bowie.)

The Iowa Census Report of 1836-1880 contains this information relating to Story, Iowa:-

"Story-part of the County of Benton in 1837, and, later, established and boundaries defined, January 13th, 1846, Attached to the County of Benton four days later, for election, revenue and judicial purposes; and the same day to the County of Palk for the same purposes. Attached to the County of Boone, January 22nd, 1853.

See Acts, Seventh Legislative Assembly, Chapters 82-96, and 101, Fourth General Assembly, Chapter 12.

"The County was named in honour of the eminent Jurist, Joseph Story, for a third of a century Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Joseph Story came from Massachusetts, and his home was in Boston. He never lived in this State, and as far as history goes, I think none of his family lived here." (C. M. Soper.)

A Mr. John Story in Virginia is an executor to the will of Henry Fielding of King's and Queen's County, Virginia. The will bears date 26th Oct., 1704. It was proved on the 27th November. 1712. (P. 1448, Vol. II., " Genealogical Gleanings in England." Waters.)
