THE STOREYS OF LANCASTER.

The register of the marriage of this William Storey, grandfather of Sir Thomas Storey, Knight, should be at Troutbeck, but this record with other records - says Mr. Richard Storey - was lost. The same gentleman likewise states that the family to which he belongs "changed their name from Story to Storey owing to some remote family difference and estrangement."

Members of all the branches of the Storey family have been in the habit of spelling their name with or without the e for generations. What Mr. Storey states may be correct enough, but such a change only indicated harking back from one old form to another equally as old.

It used to be said of William Storey, of Troutbeck, grandfather of Sir Thomas Storey, that he "had three heads." This was an allusion to his properties in Troutbeck, viz., Browhead, Townhead and Drummelmirehead. This was probably owing to William Storey's grandfather, John Storey, having a "Long Green Head" - green in freshness, of course, despite age.

In regard to the Storeys of Ulverston, it used to be said by those who best knew them that it was always "Yes or no" with them. They called a spade a spade, and there was no beating about the bush.

The issue of William Storey, second son of William Storey and Mary, née Greenup, of Low Wray, by his wife Mary, née Clark, of Lees Rigg, Wigton, county Cumberland, is as follows:- (See Subsidiary Pedigree of Pasadena, California Storeys.)

William Storey and Sarah, his wife, had a daughter Martha, married to Thomas White, of Newby Bridge. From this latter union came George Storey White, mechanical engineer, from whom by his marriage with Jane Storey, daughter of John Storey and Mary Ann his wife, née Kendal, of Rampside, sprang the Whites settled at Pasadena in California. John Storey was the eldest son of Isaac Storey, of Bardsea.

From a brother of Martha Storey - Thomas Storey, who married Sarah, daughter of John and Maria Sanders - descended Sarah Maria Storey, Martha Storey who married Thomas Michaelson Machell, Jane Storey who married Col. James Holmes Poulton, J.P., of Hale, Cheshire, and Emily, Tamar, George and Thomasina Storey.
