Storeys |
OLD NORTHUMBRIAN STOREYS.
Efforts have been put forth with the object of finding some scion of this
family of Storer - anciently Storey - in order to corroborate the foregoing
statement so far as alliance with Edward Storey, Bishop of Carlisle, is
concerned, but, hitherto, the efforts have been in vain.
Neither the Storers alias Storeys, nor any of the Storeys or Stories can claim descent from Dr. Story, Bishop of Chichester, since the Bishop was a celibate; therefore, the assumption is that the Storers of Coombe Court claim descent from a brother of the prelate, probably the John mentioned in his lordship's will. Of this, however, more hereafter. Lower says that "Störer is a common surname in Germany, and denotes a disturber; but our Storers are probably indigenous and conservators rather than breakers of the peace, for two officers of the manor of Whittlesea, in the Isle of Ely, elected every year, are called Storers." ![]()
