EARLY STOREYS AND THEIR ANCIENT HOMES.

Among other names mentioned in the will are those of Adam ffacet (ffawcett), decretist, whom Dr. Story speaks of as "Cancellarini mei," "Dom. Robertum Kyrkland, Capellani, me prdictis., Henricus Jackson Senescallum Hospicii mei."

A doctor and chancellor, a chaplain and a marshal are thus mentioned. It appears that one Robert Hitchcooke was apparitor to the bishop. The codicil is lengthy. It has allusions to John Mantell and also to the sisters of the bishop - (sisters in the spiritual sense). Then the brothers-"fratribus" - Johannem Paupers (?), hospitalis Scti Jacobi, juxta Cicestrii, Nicholas Tavern [er], cap. pro salvte ainmæ mea Beate Marie Virginis de Sithwork, et Wolsingham (?) et Sanc. Thome Cant. [erbury] are besought to pray for the testator's soul.

Other names occur - "Lego Roberto Essex, Thomae Mundy, Johes RandaII et stabulo familis 6s. 8d. . . . . Gerado Burwell, Archymo Cicestrii peluim meam rotandam et argentica ea intera."

There are mentioned in other parts of the will a Robert Martyn, sub-deacon, and a name I make out as Robert Norton, John Story " cubiculariis meis." This John Story was evidently the bishop's chamberlain, or domestic chaplain. The codicil was apparently written shortly after the will. Here is an extract indicating that Dr. Story had a sister - an own blood sister named Agnes-

"Item. In primo lego Agneti sorori me exti sibi deliberando p. executores me palatinus et animatus durante vita temporitz."

A silver decanter is also bequeathed to this sister.

Amongst other names are those of Thomas Wardell, chaplain to the deacon, Robert Norton [alias Morton] and . . . . Baker. It would also appear that money palfrey [palafreno, pala or parafredus - para beside, and veredus a post-horse, a variant of veho to carry, and rheda a carriage] - was paid by the bishop to the King [Edward IV.].

Edward Spurnett alias Burnett, Archimo Cestrii, Reginald Bray, EDWARD, REGIS et ELIZABETHA, CONSORTIBUS (Elizabeth Woodstock), Thoma Dacre, Duc. Katrine combe parventu et benefactore, William Beverley, Wrightwithryng, Ric: Holmes, John Badcombe, Radulphus Burwell and John Cruchey of Aldingbourne appear in the codicil in connection with matters ecclesiastical. From the following paragraph the bishop's executors are discovered:-

"Radulph Burwell, lego hospitabilis Cicestrii venit Rogero Church, Decret. doctore prerogative Crte expi Cant. 27 die mensi Marcij 1503, Juramento ac Rdc ffacet et Henricii Jackson executores nominate."

An Edward Bartlot, fil. et heredes Edwardi Bartelot, defunct, appears "habend et tenend messuag. et terras in Amberley et Hoghton" (to have and to hold a messuage and lands in Amberley and Hoghton).
