Storeys |
VARIANTS OF THE NAME.
In the "Chartulary of Whitby Abbey" [Minister's Accounts] p. 722, 31st to
38th Hen. VIII., mention is made of Bryan Story, a tenant of the Abbey, living in
Whitby.
A Richard Story is named in a list of persons claiming sanctuary in Durham Cathedral, 14th November, 1509. Sanctuarum Dunelmente pp. 56-92. There is a Johannes Story also met with in the same work. The former would probably be Richard Story, or more properly Storey, of Beanley, who slew one Jasper Craster, a servant of the Earl of Northumberland. There appears to have been a blood fued between the Hebburns, of Hebburn, and the Storeys. See p. 175, Vol II., History of Northumberland. The Crasters were lords of the manor of Craster, in the parish of Embleton. In the Durham Account Rolls, Vol. I., an Edward Storie appears.
In the Testamenia Eboracensia, Vol. VI., p.91., 1902 edited by John William
Clay, Richard Cay [Kay], of the Olde Haule, Wakefield, in Com. Evor, proved 3rd
October, 1539, testator gives to his brother Storrez, with other beneficiaries, the
sum of vj viij. In the same volume, p. 199, Ralph Claxton, of Winyard, in Com. Dunelm, Esquire, eldest son of Ralph Claxton and Sibyl, daughter and heiress of William Conyers, of Wynyard, gives to Rauf Storye "one black maire," &c. [Will proved 1548-9.] A Germain Story was lessee of the toils of Leicester, 17th Elizabeth (1576) In "Depositions and Ecclesiastiacal Proceedings" it is the will of Giles Storie, of Newcastle, made 16th July, 1586.
