Storeys |
FOREWORD.
interested in this by no means easy task of looking up Old Storeys, and connecting
them with the newer Storeys of to-day. It is only becoming to add that persons in
almost every rank of life-persons of affluence and otherwise, have aided to the
best of their ability. One is anxious to avoid anything likely to cause soreness
or a thought that there has been a wilful or careless omission of recognition of
kind assistance, therefore it is to be hoped that not one lady or gentleman who
ought to be mentioned-where mention of any is made-has been omitted. It would be a
real grief to the compiler to find that an omission had been made since the desire
is to bow honest acknowledgements to every one meriting such. Among those first to be named are the Rev. H. F. Gilbanks, M.A., Rector of Great Orton, Carlisle; the Rev. P. Byard, M.A.. Vicar of Stanwix. Carlisle ; the Rev. Ivor B. Graham, Rector of Arthuret, Carlisle; the Rev. Canon Bower, Carlisle; A. N. Bowman, Esq.. Bishop's Registry, Carlisle; J. P. Hinds, Esq., 20, Fisher Street, Carlisle; the late Thompson Wigham, Esq., Howard Place, Carlisle; Walter Palmer Story, Esq., Carlisle; John Story, Esq., Kirkland House, Wigton, Cumberland; Robert Wrigley, Esq., London City and Midland Bank, Brampton, Carlisle ; Messrs. John Story of the Demesne Farm, Rockcliffe, Carlisle; Thomas Story, of Currock, Carlisle; John Story, of Orchard Street, Carlisle; Joseph Story, of Arthur Street, Carlisle; John Sewell Story, of Botcherby House, Carlisle; and the Rev. T. W. Story, M.A., Rector of Haworth, Keighley, Yorks. There are also included in this group Miss R. E. Story, of 31, Nelson Street, Carlisle; Mr. George Story. 11, Wigton Road, Carlisle ; Miss Davidson, of Cargo, Carlisle; Mrs. Poulton, of Brooklyn, Harrop Road, Hale, Cheshire. Those enumerated have contributed much information relating to the Cumberland Storys generally, and have aided in showing the connections of several branches. The late Alderman T. Wigham was most help-ful in regard to everything gleanable about Thomas Story, the well-known Society of Friends preacher, formerly of Justice Town-now Lynehow. This city father enlisted the sympathy of Mr. W. M. Mervine, an able antiquary residing in Philadelphia, U. S. A. He was also instrumental in obtaining some useful items from Mr. Norman Penney, F. R. Hist, S., of the Friends' Library, Bishopsgate Without, E.C., and Mr. W. C. Lane, Librarian of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.; The Right Rev. T. J. Welland, D.D., Bishop of Down and Connor and the Very Rev. L. H. O'Brien, Dean of Limerick, also assisted in giving any knowledge they possessed or could glean in respect to members of Thomas Story's family. Concerning one of the most distinguished of men bearing the name Story-or Storey-Bishop Story, Bishop of Carlisle, and subsequently Bishop of Chichester, Canon Bower of Carlisle and Mr. J. P. Hinds did all that laid in their power to unravel certain skeins in the early life of the said prelate. For further particulars relating to Dr. Story, sincere obligations are likewise due to the Rev. Prebendary Deedes and the Rev. Prebendary Bennett of Chichester Cathedral, the Right Honorable and Right Reverend Winnington, Bishop of London; the Rev. E. F. Campbell Ward, Vicar of All Hallows, Barking; the Rev. Thomas Parker, M.A., Rector of All Hallows, Lombard Street. E.C.; the Rev. S. P. Gardiner, M.A., Lambeth Palace, S.E. Characteristically helpful in tracing the descent of the eminent jurist, Joseph Story, Dane Professor of Law at Harvard University, Camb., Mass., have been Mr. Henry Grafton Story of Brooklyn, New York, son of Major-General Joseph Grafton Storey (U.S.A.); Miss Emily Talbot of 35 Academy Place, Nashville, Tennessee; and the Marquise Peruzzi di Midici of Florence, Italia; and Mr. Bellamy Story of 56 Fenway, Boston, U.S.A. In arranging the lineages of the Northumberland Storeys it is impossible to adequately express one's appreciation of the assistance given by Mr. Ralph Storey-Storey, J.P., of Beanley, Ainwick; Mr. John Moffat of The Duke's School, Alnwick; Miss S. Storey of Hill Side, Rothbury; Miss Storey of 6 Park Avenue, Harrogate; Mr. E. J. Storey of Ilford, Essex; Mr. J. Somes Story of Bridge House. Cromford. Matlock, Derbyshire; Mr. Anthony Browne Herbert Story, thirty-six years private secretary to five Governors of the Isle of Man, Government Office, Douglas (died 22nd April, 1910); and Mr. D. D. Dixon, an antiquarian writer residing at Rothbury, Every known source that could be thought of was tested in respect to the Storeysgate Storeys, and generous searches were set afoot by the Rev. Canon Hensley Henson of St. Margaret's, Westminster; Mr. John Hunt, Town Clerk of Westminster; Mr. T. J. Wright, Clerk of Works, Dean's Yard, Westminster; and Mr. Alexander Bothwell of 20a Louisville Road, Upper
